Details

The museum illustrates the history of the ancient sites of the urban and extra-urban territory of Caltanissetta and other towns within its province, from before recorded history up to the late ancient period.

The collections
An impressive number of items found by the Caltanissetta Archaeological Association in the 1960s, mainly on the sites of Pietrarossa, S. Giuliano, Palmintelli, Gibil Gabib, Vassallaggi, and Sabucina, form the oldest core of the collections.

With exhibited objects very representative of the local civilizations, the museum is one of the most important in Sicily.

Note the bronze findings as well as the pottery from the settlements of Sabucina and Dessueri, as well as the items from the site of Polizzello. The latter are important for the study of the local civilizations during the Iron Age, whose artistic production was influenced by the Aegean-Mycenaean peoples who migrated to the island in the 15th-14th centuries BC.

The museum also exhibits some of the archaeological collections of Capodarso. Though part of the province of Enna, Capodarso is geographically and historically linked to Caltanissetta: together with Sabucina, it controlled the valley of the Salso river (southern Imera).

The exhibition is organized both chronologically and topographically, and is divided into five well-documented rooms.

Housed in a combined building from both the Fascist era and the 1960s, the Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta was originally founded as the Municipal Museum. Since 1993, it has been administered by the Region of Sicily and houses also the offices of the Archaeological Section of the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Assets.
